Desert Camping

This exciting option allows you to experience the desert up close with your friends or family and our Bedouin guide.

Our guide will select a suitable location for the camp depending on the season and weather conditions. Once you have arrived at the camping location, the guide will set up the mattresses for sleeping. (You can help decide the set-up. It is no problem if you want privacy for the night).

Next, your guide will go to collect firewood. We strongly recommend you go with him to see how he collects the wood! There is an art to it and he is certainly a professional in this field. (Also you are able to try yourself once you have seen how he does it.) A head lamp or travel light will be useful in the collection of wood as often this will be the time the sun is going down and the stars are coming out.

Your guide will then build a fire to make Bedouin whiskey (normal tea) with sugar, and possibly milk or desert herbs. He will show you how to make a great fire that will be enough to make tea and dinner.

Once the tea is on the fire and its going nicely, it a nice time to relax. Enjoy the fire and stars and just where you are in the desert in Jordan. It is very quiet and you can hear sounds from far away. If the stars are out you will simply be amazed and see many shooting stars. It's a good time to take some photos. If you have a tripod, you have a good chance to take a night sky picture.

Next the guide will prepare your freshly cooked dinner. There are a number of dishes he can prepare depending on your dietary preferences. It will take him between 30mins and 1hr to prepare and cook dinner and in this time you can just be enjoying and relaxing. If you would like a drink such as wine, beer or spirits, it's best to buy in Aqaba, Amman or Petra before you arrive. Keep in mind that there is no alcohol available for purchase in Wadi Rum.

After dinner you can do as you wish; chat, play cards, watch the fire, enjoy the stars, listen to music.

We fall asleep when everything goes quiet and have a deep sleep. The feeling when you wake up in the desert is rejuvenating and unique. Your whole body clock has slowed down a few paces and you will enjoy the slower pace of life. Generally we wake up with the sun, and the time will depend on where we have been sleeping. Some locations are much better for an early sunrise and others will let you sleep in til 10am.

Once you wake up, the guide will collect more wood and will cook a fresh breakfast for you. It will be eggs, tomatoes and onions with some spices in Jordanian bread. After breakfast, depending on your plans maybe you will have a quick look around the area, begin your tour or be taken by 4wd back to Rum Village for your next stop.

We hope you like this desert camping as much as we do.
