Wadi Rum Canyon

Introduction

The Bedouins name places in Wadi Rum using a few different methods. One way is by naming after a story that has happened in the past at the place. Another is naming it because it looks similar to something (like a human neck).

Rakabat Canyon

Distance 2.0 km Elevation 1204m to 1370m

Location 36 R 0735497 UTM 3274353

The name Rakabat means neck. Because its very similar to this place on your body. The canyon is set between two big mountains from the village side called al nasraneh and the other side called Um Ishrin. Some people along time ago before cars used this way to cross to the village as it was easier to cross than walking around the mountain.

Walk Description: Rakabat will give you some challenge and sense of adventure. In one section our guide will need to assist you to pass carefully and in the other instruct you how to climb down. It is useful to stretch your muscles before you begin as in the beginning of the tour you need to walk up the mountain for 10 - 15 minutes. There are good views of Rum Village and Jebel Rum from the beginning of the canyon. One rock that you will be showed has ancient inscriptions on it. This canyon walk is not straight, so it is easy to go the wrong way without the guide leading you thru it. At the end of the canyon there are nice views of a red sand dune where you will be able to have a nice rest before you begin to walk to Horg Umm Ishrin Canyon.

Horg Umm Ishrin Valley

Distance 2.6 km Elevation 1136m to 1022m

Location 36 R 0737499 UTM 3274436

The name Horg means the piece that is used to put on the donkey, so they can carry things on the animal like water or wood. We think Umm Ishrin looks like a donkey and the mountain next to it looks like the Horg so this is where the name of the canyon comes from. Umm Ishrin was named after the death of 20 people who died here. Umm means mother and Ishrin means 20.

Walk description: This trail is mostly flat. The canyon is wide and you will be walking in the sand. It is possible to see camels in this canyon as one family from the village always leave their animals in this area. You don't need a guide in this route so he will meet you at the end to take you to Burrah canyon by Jeep.

Burrah Canyon

Distance 4.0 km Elevation 1128m to 1178m

Location 36 R 0742355 UTM 3274403

Burrah means round shaped rock, so they call it Burrah because it has many of them.

Walk description: This walk will take around 1.5 to 2hrs to complete. It is a mostly flat route with stunning views on your left. There are many opportunities to take photos in this canyon as you walk straight for a few hundred meters. The mountains on either side are truly beautiful and will put a smile on your face as you are passing by.

El Mahama Canyon

Distance 1.3 km Elevation 1097m to 1135m

Location 36 R 0739624 UTM 3265770

Mahama means crossing a canyon between smaller mountains. Also when there is sand in a canyon and you can cross it,it is called Mahama.

Walk Description: El Mahama Canyon will give you a totally different impression to the other canyons previously visited. It is not as wide and the colours and atmosphere are both darker than the others previously visited. It has fig trees, rocks, sand and some tight areas where you need to climb up, but it is not difficult and can be completed without much assistance.

Khazali Canyon

Distance 500 m Elevation 1013m

Location 36 R 0734898 UTM 3268102

Hazz means jump. Ali is a name of a man. He jumped from a high place in Khazali as he was being chased by men who wanted to kill him. Everyone thought he would die as it was so high but when he jumped he survived and run away.

Walk Description: This canyon is a short walk however the surface is different as water comes here in the winter so you must be careful walking as it can be slippery on the rocks as the surface is very smooth. A long time ago people came here to get water from the man made pools of water left here from the winter time. Nowadays these old pools are full of sand. There is another canyon joined to Khazali and if you feel like walking further you can with our guide, however it is hard to climb up the slippery surface. Khazali has three types of inscriptions Nabataean, Islamic and Thamudic. The Nabataean inscriptions consists of mountains goats, people, camels, horses, feet and spirits. The Islamic inscriptions talks about the prophet Mohammed and Islamic God. The Thamudic inscriptions are not very clear as water has damaged them over time and they are nearly not visible on the sandstone rocks, but you can still see a little bit.
